When history professor Michael Faraday (Jeff Bridges) is left to raise his young son alone after the death of his FBI-agent wife, he soon becomes fascinated by the workings of terrorist organisations similar to the one responsible for his wife’s death. The more he learns, the more blurred becomes the line between healthy suspicion and dangerous paranoia becomes blurred, not least when it comes to the inconsistencies in the back-story of his new, seemingly friendly neighbours Oliver and Cheryl Lang (Tim Robbins and Joan Cusack). As the sons of the families grow closer, tensions rise between the fathers and suburbia grows more and more frightening.
