Wayne Hayes (Robert Redford) and his wife Eileen (Helen Mirren) have a comfortable life. Wayne has made a fortune in the Rental Car business. But their lives have become passive and routine. That is, until the day that Wayne is kidnapped as he leaves his mansion for work. The FBI are called, the ransom request is received. Eileen gathers the large ransom. Along the way, Eileen discovers how much she didn't really know her husband. Meanwhile, Wayne is with his captor, Arnold Mack (Willem Dafoe). They leave the car and begin a long hike through the woods. Arnold's job is just to deliver Wayne to the where the other kidnappers await. During the trek, Wayne and Arnold learn more about each other and about themselves.
